Well, it’s not the Krampus I’ve been pining for, but it’ll do. UPS dropped this new-to-me Salsa Mukluk on my doorstep a few weeks ago, and I’ve been getting it set up the way I like it since. I made a few basic fit adjustments and swapped out the brakes and the rear cog.

The previous owner set it up as a 32x18 single speed, which was a tad high to push through the snow. I swapped the cog for a 21 tooth, and now all is right with the world. I had it out on hard styrofoam snowpack late last night, and it was a ball.

So Oppo, what are you riding this winter?

P.S.: thank you to everyone who offered condolences a few weeks ago. I really appreciate it.

That’s a really cool bike!

Thanks! I’m having fun with it so far. I’ve never had a bike set up as a ss before, so there’s a bit of a learning curve. And a fitness curve. I can’t just spin my way up a hill in the snow anymore.

Yeah I’ve heard those fat tire bikes are a great work out and very rewarding to ride

Nice! The Mulkuk is a great frame, especially with a SS setup. Looks like a carbon fork too?

I’m still riding the same Niner SIR that I’ve had since ‘13. Reynolds steel frame, Reba XX with remote lockout, Conti Mountain King 2.4", and a mostly XT group.

You should definitely try one. I bought this from a guy in SC, so you don’t need to be in the great snowy north to enjoy the benefits. I rode my last fat bike year round.

Nice ride!

Yeah, the carbon fork is a nice touch. Right now it’s 32 lbs before going tubeless, so I should be right in the neighborhood of 30 once that’s done. It’s a huge and noticeable difference from my last fat bike.

I once met a guy with a Niner AIR9, full carbon, single speed, tubeless, 29x2" tires, the thing weighed 16.5lbs. Mindblowing.

The Mulkuk is pretty rad! I hope you post up about some more adventures with it.

I’d love to get one. But I don’t have the money to play in that game right now.

Fun! I went for a ride yesterday. Not a ton of snow in the trail, but it sure was muddy! Worth it though. I’m also riding salsa. Horsethief 29er to be exact. They make great bikes.

As a gent of a few bikes, I tend to swap around my rides. I’ve just packed my Niner RLT in the truck as part of our 1000 km move so I’ll be riding that around our new town until I can come and get the rest of them. I suspect my Siren Twinzer will get more use off road at the new place than the Giant Anthem dually as there’s not much singletrack up there but you never know...

Sorry, that sucks. As much as the single speed is kicking my ass right now, I’m liking it for exactly that reason.

Nice! It’s on my list if I ever see a used at the right price.

A friend let me test ride his Niner I-don’t-know-what a few years ago, and totally turned me on to steel. What a great ride. It’s why the Krampus is at the top of my list.

that and its not a fattie. I can still get thru a couple inches. any more than that and it gets tough

Did you rent on Mackinac?

A relative of a friend let me ride it. I unfortunately don’t know where he got it, but when the group I was with hiked around, there was at least one bike rental shop open

Throw on some Conti tires and fenders and she’s all set for the winter commute. Miele Svelto RRD.

Nice ride. I’ve got my eye out for a good year round commuter. I want a frame set up for a gates drive, but they tend toward unicorn status on the used market.
